TABARD GARDENS, SOUTHWARK

The aim was to encourage greater use by the community of this run-down, inner-city public space in need of major improvements.
Poor facilities and a crumbling environment had been a hazard to adults and children.

The new features included a piazza seating area, a rest-stop garden, a range of play equipment and a toddlers' play area.

The requirement for durability was an important factor in an area with a lot of vandalism.

Consideration was given to the habitat of potential insect and wildflower species, particularly in the wildflower meadows.

The wildlife area itself was much improved, being more spacious and ultimately more safe.
Upgrades to the entrances, lighting, signage and fencing were all undertaken.

Extensive liaison with the community included Public Consultation, meetings and exhibitions, where it was possible for residents' views to be considered.
